World Cup Parties for CRY

11th June 2010

Andy Scott, former professional footballer and Manager of Brentford FC is supporting CRY's 15th anniversary with a new fundraising initiative – World Cup Parties for CRY.

Andy will be ‘kicking off’ the nationwide scheme by inviting his friends and family to join him to watch one of the key matches in return for a small donation.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It takes place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa.

Andy Scott's own playing career was brought to a premature end when he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) by CRY Consultant Cardiologist, Professor Sanjay Sharma in 2005.

Since then, he has been actively involved in CRY and has used his own experience to help raise awareness of the devastating impact that sudden cardiac death can have.

Andy is hoping that many of the families that regularly support CRY across the country will follow his lead and host their own World Cup Party for CRY.

If you’d like to get involved, here are a few ideas:

  • Ask a group of friends round to your house to watch a match.  Provide nibbles and drinks to keep everyone in the World Cup spirit and ask for a nominal contribution (e.g. £5) to donate to CRY. Weather permitting, you could have a BBQ.

  • Why not theme your party and serve refreshments based on a particular national team - e.g. tapas for a Spain game?

  • To put the ‘fun’ into fundraising, organise some games and sweepstakes - e.g. final score, red cards, player of the match, etc.

  • Get a larger group of friends together in a local pub to watch a game – and ask for everyone to make a small contribution to the charity. Take a digital photo of your ‘party’ and send it to your local newspaper with a caption and a press release to explain why you are supporting CRY.  You can send your photos and a ‘match report’ of your event to cry@c-r-y.org.uk to be included on the CRY website.

  • For key daytime games, ask your boss to let you and your colleagues watch the match either at your workplace or in the local pub.  Everyone would need to donate a small amount to join in.  And, you could ask your company if they offer a ‘matched giving’ scheme.

  • Create a football themed dress down day or party.

For sponsor forms, CRY literature, fundraising items, advice or anything else to help your World Cup Party to be a success please call Ben in the CRY office on 01737 363222 or e-mail ben@c-r-y.org.uk
