Your 30th Birthday – poem by Kathryn Badon

The 8th of February, your day,
Almost more special now,
Now we cannot share it with you,
Now we have to create for ourselves,
Your smile,
Your fun,
Your spirit of joy,
Your playfulness,
Your vulnerability,
Your daring,
Your vivaciousness,
Your love of life.

You would have been 30,
It would have been a great celebration,
But your time got stuck at 27
You remain 27, always 27.
Forever young in our memory,
You will never grow old,
You will never have grey hairs,
Get wrinkles,
Become doddery and rheumatic,
See your own son become a father,
You will not be at my funeral.

As we celebrate without you
Your 30th birthday,
In Berlin – a place you wanted to see
A two sided city.
With a great depth for sadness,
Exposed human treachery,
But such great colour,
Creativity, positivity.
A way of facing human tragedy,
Brought on by cruelty and hard nature,
Transforming it into something better,
Based on compassion, courage and connectivity.
That opens life anew,
Spewing artists,
Offering hope.
Brightness, a better future, joy,
Fleeing and growing,
From that darkness of human spirit.

Almost symbolic of you,
Your life – stolen too quickly.
Gone……gone……gone..
As we had to see you there, cold, asleep, And say our goodbyes.
But your seed was sown
Your son was born,
Without you here.
He smiles – like you,
He is determined – like you,
He runs toward,
He has hope, joy
He cries sometimes,
But shares laughter.
He is our future
Just a little bit of you,
Left on this earth.

Thank you for all you were,
For all you did.
Your kindness of spirit
Your big heart,
Your friendship and love.
We miss you,
We celebrate you,
We love you
As always.
For ever
Happy Birthday dear Adrian.
