After Julian passed away in 2000 due to an undiagnosed heart condition, his parents, Shirley and David Wort, set up the ‘Julian Wort Memorial Fund’ with charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). They campaign to raise funds and bring cardiac screenings and awareness of heart conditions to young people in Frome. “Since we started our fundraising in 2001, as a family, and with the support of many friends, clubs and donations, we have raised the wonderful amount of £43,883,” said Shirley. “With this money we have donated through CRY, two ECG machines, two defibrillators to Frome Hospital and the medical practice, and funded four screening days where 369 young people were screened for hidden heart problems. And we hope that we have raised awareness of these heart conditions.” To mark the 20th anniversary of Julian’s death, the Wort family has organised a heart screening event for young people to be held on the 21st March 2020. “The cost of a screening day to test 100 young people aged between 14 – 35 is £5,000. So we are still actively fund-raising,” said Shirley. Read More
