Five years ago, Pete McAvoy passed away at 22 years old after suffering a cardiac arrest. Since his death, his father Peter Snr has campaigned for the detection of similar undiagnosed heart conditions. However, last year at the the age of 60, Peter Snr passed away. Now friends and family are preparing for their annual #4Pete Charity Ball, which is to be held for the 2nd time since Peter Snr’s passing next month.
“Peter Snr died in August last year. He would have been 61 in October,” said his wife, Anne. “It’s a really emotional time right now with the event coming up and this year it will be a double whammy with both of them gone. They are both in our hearts.” She went on : “It was always Peter’s intention that the charity ball was not so much a fundraiser but more of an opportunity for everyone to come together, dress up and have a nice evening.”
The money raised through the family’s fundraising goes towards funding Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) heart screenings for young people between the ages of 14 – 35. In the last three years, their campaign has raised more than ÂŁ60,000.
“The money that has been raised over the years pays for a cardiologist team with nurses to come up from London to run screenings,” said Anne. “It costs nearly ÂŁ10,000 for the two days of screenings.”
