On 14th June 2008, Mike Aylott and Adam Austin began a cycle ride from Lands End in Cornwall, to John O’Groats in northern Scotland.
Both were raising money for CRY in the process, in memory of Mike’s fiancée (and Adam’s friend) Jane Starr, who died suddenly on 17th May 2006, aged just 33, of a rare heart condition later diagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
The pair were accompanied on their journey by friends, and fellow cyclists, Chris Shattock and Steve Malusky – who were raising money for Hertfordshire Scouts.
They all reached John O’Groats just 12 days later, at 8:07am on Thursday 26th June, having cycled a total of 934 miles.
The team suffered remarkably few mechanical problems – only one puncture and a few minor running repairs.
They did, however, endure their fair share of severe weather conditions, particularly in Scotland.
Mike said “It was a terrific experience. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed it, and the whole 13 days seemed to fly by. It was tough going in places, notably one day in Scotland where we cycled 110 miles, but we managed to reach all our 12 pre-booked overnight destinations, and finished bang on schedule.”
So far Adam and Mike have raised £2,050 between them for CRY.
