Young Amy Mead was hoisted up into the air to mark the official opening of Charlotte’s Day at the weekend.
The 13-year-old cut the ribbon to start the afternoon of fun and entertainment in Clyde Street, Sheerness, on Saturday.
Amy had been on a school trip with Charlotte Wright four years ago when Charlotte suddenly collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Along with Amy, Charlotte’s mum Karen Williams has been raising money for charity, including Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) ever since and in particular this annual event.
“It was absolutely brilliant,” said Mrs Williams. There are so many people I have to thank, especially Tina McCarthy without whom I couldn’t have done all this.
“It really was a community event, all the residents were brilliant and it was just bigger and better than we ever imagined. Saturday was the busier day with Sunday more of a chill out day, but it was fantastic.”
The money is still to be counted but Ms Williams thinks they have raised more than £2,000.
The attractions included the Sheppey Pirates, Zulus, a display of dancing from the Helen K School of Dance, tug of war competition won by the Blacksmith’s team, as well as a barbecue and various stalls.
Ms Williams added: “There’s just so many people I want to thank, Swale Borough Council for letting us shut the road, Mark Black and the Blacksmith’s Arms for all their help, the singers, the Round Table for their barbecue, the St John Ambulance and anybody else I’ve forgotten.”
All the money raised will go to Preston Skreens, Demelza House Hospice Care and CRY.
