On Sunday 7th August, Putney Cricket Club held their annual 6-a-side intra-club tournament, where they were helping to raise money for CRY in memory of Emlyn Wibberley (28.11.1995 – 09.06.2010)
“The event was organised in the main by Ben Brook and Trevor Ashworth, and as a ‘special’ thank you for all his hard work he has put in to the club over the last 9 or so years, Ben decided to hire a costume for Trevor to play the tournament in – photo attached. It’s enough to turn Matt Lucas green with envy!
Teams were named Chinny’s Handbags, Wendy’s Handbags, Sellick’s Magnums, The Youth of Today!, Telfer’s Right Hooks and The Bloody Mary’s, and reflected a somewhat distorted view of the Skippers. The day started very promisingly on Putney Lower Common, with bright sunshine and a few scattered clouds about. A pitchside BBQ was set up and the photo clearly shows that those in charge of the BBQ were clearly better cricketers than chefs ….…hhhmmm then again maybe not!
We managed to complete about a third of the games before the heavens opened and whilst we all huddled beneath a gazebo and the surrounding trees and collectively prayed for the skies to clear, an hour later and still raining hard, we called it a day and packed up the ground and sloshed our way back to the pavilion for some refreshments and other ‘entertainment’.
Monies were raised by each person paying a match fee of £10 on the day with half the fees being donated to CRY. My daughter Alice and my wife Megan thought it would be entertaining and a great idea to raise additional money for CRY by me getting my hairy legs partially waxed. A collection jar was passed around and very soon after it was filled I had my leg up and the first waxing strip was applied and ripped off by Megan, much to the hilarity of the now gathered mob, many armed with cameras. Chinny and Will (Wendy) were only too eager to get in on the act and inflict further pain on me – for those of you who can bear it, a You Tube link is shown below.

In all a total sum of £367.66 was raised on the day, with the promise of a further £200.00 if I shaved my head – this is under consideration!
On behalf of Megan, Alice and myself, I would like to thank all those at Putney Cricket Club for their most valued friendship and support we have received, and also for the efforts they have put in and money raised for CRY.”
