Read Update 67 online here. The CRY Update is the charity’s newsletter, reporting on CRY news and events, cardiac screenings, breaking developments in medical research and CRY supporters’ fundraising over the preceding months.
This memorial fund has been set up by the family to help CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death, support those affected and promote CRY’s screening programme.
On Saturday 16th May our families lives changed forever…
My beautiful nephew, Miles Reid, a healthy 21 year old man died suddenly following a cardiac arrest. I was at home, cutting the grass when I heard from his mum that he had collapsed whilst playing football with his twin brother Dane and teammates. I drove like a maniac to Solihull hospital, expecting to get there and see him sitting up in bed with wires strapped to his chest. But instead his brother had to break the news that he had gone.
The next few days were a blur. All the family came together, but there was shock and disbelief at what had happened. How could this have happened to our Milesy? Such a healthy young man, with his whole life ahead of him. He was a student at Birmingham University studying Early Years degree to lead on to become a teacher. Following in the footsteps of his older sister Carly. He had a passion for football, as did his older brother Craig. And he had an unbreakable bond with his twin brother Dane.
We have still yet to learn the cause for the Miles’s cardiac arrest, but what we have learnt since his death is how many lives he has impacted on in his 21 years. Miles completed a placement at Little Learners Montessori Nursery, and was so well loved they asked him to stay on. The staff and children were devastated by the news of his death and went on to plant a blossom tree in his memory.
So many people have sent such kind messages and his friends have been amazing, wanting to raise money by having football matches or running marathons etc. So as a family we decided to go forward with a memorial fund in the name of our Miles. Forever in our hearts.
