Andrew Baker

Remembering Andrew Baker

In memory of Andrew Baker, a beloved son, brother and friend who tragically passed away from a heart attack while training for the Great North Run in 2013, we are committed to raising awareness about cardiac issues in young people. Andy’s untimely death at just 34 years old highlights the urgent need for increased awareness, early detection, and preventive measures to combat heart conditions that can silently threaten the lives of young, seemingly healthy individuals.

Who Was Andrew Baker?

Andy was the epitome of vitality and enthusiasm. Known for his fun-loving spirit and infectious energy, he could light up any room (especially dance floors) with his presence. Whether it was his adventurous escapades or his knack for making everyone around him laugh, Andy was a beacon of positivity, no matter the situation or the Sheffield United result. He was not just an ordinary Yorkshire lad; he was extraordinary in his kindness and generosity.

Andy’s adventurous spirit saw him scaling glaciers in Canada, swimming with dolphins in Cuba, and exploring the world with an insatiable curiosity. He was always the first to volunteer for charitable causes, raising donations through abseiling, half marathons and Yorkshire Warrior assault course. His planned participation in the Great North Run was a testament to his charitable nature, aiming to raise funds and awareness for causes close to his heart.

The Heartbreaking Loss

Tragically, Andy’s life was cut short when he suffered a fatal heart attack during a training run for the Great North Run. His sudden passing shocked everyone who knew him and brought to light a critical issue: cardiac problems in young people often go unnoticed until it is too late. Andrew’s story is a poignant reminder that heart health is crucial, regardless of age.

Raising Awareness and Funds

In honour of Andy’s memory over 10 years on, we are dedicating our efforts to promote awareness about cardiac health in the young. Our goal is to educate, inform, and prevent such tragic losses by encouraging regular health check-ups, understanding the signs and symptoms of heart conditions, and promoting a heart-healthy lifestyle.

To further this mission, we are organizing a series of events and activities aimed at raising funds for cardiac research and support services. These initiatives will help provide resources for better detection, treatment, and prevention of heart conditions in young people.

Since Andrews death, over £17,000 has been raised for CRY.
