3rd February 2005
£339.65 was raised for CRY by our AVCE Travel and Tourism students. As part of their course, the students had to plan, carry out and evaluate an event with a travel and tourism theme.
The group of 11 students was split into one group of 5 and one group of 6. The group of 6 consisted of Charlene Watkinson, Rachael Bayliss, Holly Clark, Lucy Rozenbroek, Rebecca Piwinski and Gemma Harland – who decided to organise a ‘UK Seaside Promotional Event’.
The event took place on the 3rd February in the college sports hall. The students carried out a sponsored walk prior to the event to raise money to fund their activities.
On the day of the event, the students operated a ‘Seaside Information Stand’, and they arranged for real donkeys to be present for ‘guess the name of the donkey’!
There was a ‘Hook a Duck’ game, tombola, ice cream and popcorn sales, and many more activities with a ‘seaside theme’.
The students could choose where the proceeds of the event went. The money could have been spent on a day out for the students or other activities, but they decided to donate it to charity.
Charlene Watkinson had gone to school with Jamie Bucknell, who died suddenly from a cardiac arrest, and the group agreed that the money would be donated to CRY.
The other group of 5 decided on a ‘Mexican Event’ which took place in the sports hall on the same day as the seaside event.
This group chose to also raise money for charity and donated the £409.55 raised to Cancer Research. They had a range of Mexican activities including a bucking bronco.
