Blues stars boost rugby charity night

A fundraising auction in memory of a young rugby player who died during a game raised nearly £6,000.

Alun Mardon, 26, of Wattstown, Rhondda, collapsed just before half-time at a home game between Wattstown and Trefill in April.

Cardiff Blues players joined about 200 members of Alun's family and friends at the Rhondda Fach Sports Centre in Tylorstown for the fundraising event on Friday.

Dad Ralph, 48, of Hillside Terrace, Wattstown, said: "On the night we raised more than £5,500 but the overall fundraising total should be near to about £10,000. Some of the money will be used to buy resuscitation equipment and CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) will also get a donation. We'd also like to get a bench for the beer garden at Wattstown Rugby Club as a lasting tribute to Alun."
