Congratulations and a huge ‘thank you’ to the 51 runners, including CRY Patron Matt Wells, who took part in the BUPA Great North Run in aid of CRY on Sunday 7th September 2014. This year’s race saw over 56,000 runners take part in a very historic year for the event, seeing its one millionth finisher!
Once again the atmosphere was buzzing and the sun even shone on the day!
For the fifth year running, CRY had a stand in the Bronze Marquee which acted as a meeting point for our runners and their friends and family. The stand was well stocked with CRY literature and information for runners and spectators who were not familiar with the charity and wanted to find out more.
CRY Patron Matt Wells said: “It was a great day and no rowing. I finished in 1:23:48.6 258th. I was very pleased as I have never run a half marathon before. I met quite a few CRY people on route and at the start however I didn’t go to the CRY marquee at the end. I think I underestimated how busy it would be”
Roughly 30 of the CRY runners came back to the marquee and were welcomed and congratulated by our fantastic volunteers – Jane, Ed, Les, Iris, Jordan and Dylan – who continue to do a wonderful job of representing CRY at the Great North Run. The runners were provided with water, tea, coffee, fruit, chocolate biscuits and ever popular sausage rolls that were all obtained by the CRY volunteers! They also managed to secure some towels, for a second year, from a local hotel for runners to dry off!
A special thank you to the runners from Effective Energy and Unum who have very kindly chosen CRY as their Charity of the Year and to Alison Edwards, Joanna Joyce and Gary Thompson who ran in a CRY heart costume, despite the high temperatures on the day. It was great to spot Gary in the CRY heart costume as he approached the finishing line on the BBC coverage of the event!
We also want to thank everyone who went to meet our volunteers at the CRY stand, despite feeling exhausted. As always, it was a challenging day for everyone and especially difficult for those who were running in memory of a partner, family member or friend.
We are grateful to those who sent in photographs from the day. If you haven’t already done so, please do send any photos you have to [email protected]. We will include as many as possible on the CRY website.
Once again, we would like to thank each and every runner for their huge efforts in completing the half marathon and fundraising for CRY. They should all be extremely proud of their wonderful achievement. Their time and valued support are truly appreciated. We look forward to seeing some of you again, next year. The date of next year’s event is Sunday 13th September 2015.
