On July 7th 2007, CRY Patron Kathryn Harries completed a 32 mile walk along the Thames path, across all of the bridges from Hampton Court to Tower Bridge. Then, on July 15th, Kathryn was joined by over 400 CRY supporters on a walk crossing 8 bridges from Westminster to Tower Bridge – a distance of approximately 8 kilometres.
Over 400 people took part in the first annual CRY walk from Westminster to Tower Wharf, crossing 8 London Bridges and pledging £40,000 in sponsorship. The 8 bridges each signified one of the 8 apparently ‘fit and healthy’ young people (aged 35 and under) who die every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions.
The walk gave CRY families and supporters an opportunity to get together and commemorate or support their loved ones, whilst enjoying a beautiful walk along the banks of the Thames.
After a few words of welcome and encouragement by Alison Cox and Councillor Jan Prendergast, the walkers set off, led by Kathryn.
It was an emotional day for the participants, particularly for the vast majority that were taking part in memory of a young relative or friend.
Teams from around the UK came together to raise awareness and funds for CRY.
We had teams from:
Northern Ireland, South Wales, Middlesex, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Surrey, Kent, Warwickshire, Berkshire, Lancashire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Humberside, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Cheshire, Buckinghamshire, Devon, Staffordshire and London.
The weather again remained dry until the end of the walk.
Kathryn and CRY would like to say well done and thank you to everyone for taking part and to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help:
Chris and Jeanette Simpson; April and Amy Tucker; Pete Clark; Graham Bednash; Priyanka Sharma; Kelsea Kennedy; Kate and Jessica Coffey; Michael McRae; Paul Vickery; Rachel Alexander; Susan Hutchings; Barbara Holland; Vera Looker; Jo Pickard; Paul and Christine Rumley; Koula Louki; John Wheatley, Beth Harvey; Lena Johnson; Sarah Perkins; Jan Kennet; Richard Shand; Martin and Nicky Appleby; and Gerry Wright.
