In the UK, CRY are best known for raising awareness of young sudden cardiac death, for the support we offer to families after a tragedy, and for the cardiac screening services we offer to all young people. Throughout the rest of the world we are better known for the research we are publishing which is having a direct and immediate impact on clinical practice.
Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die suddenly and unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition (Papadakis, M: Sharma, S, et al, 2009). For this reason, CRY believes it is important for people in the medical and cardiology field to learn about the symptoms and signs of a cardiac condition in order to reduce the incidence of young sudden cardiac death. It is also important for them to know the best ways in which to manage individuals with inherited cardiac conditions.
Each year, CRY holds its International Medical Conference in London, bringing together experts in the fields of sports cardiology, inherited cardiac diseases and sudden cardiac death in the young, who present contemporary topics and developments in their respective fields. It creates an opportunity for all those involved in the care of athletes and young individuals, to gain up to date knowledge on the effects of athletic training and the diagnosis and management of individuals with inherited cardiac diseases.
This is also an important event as it allows CRY’s research fellows to present findings of their research projects, underlining the importance of CRY’s research which is changing international policies and procedures on the way we test young people and manage conditions.
