On the 31st July the first Dan Hughes 8 a side memorial cricket tournament was held at Bignall End Cricket Club. Four local cricket teams, Bignall End, Wood Lane, Audley & Betley all put out strong teams and these were joined by teams assembled by the two lads who were responsible for making the event happen, Dave Cooper entered Coops Cavaliers and Mat Holmes entered Homers Harriers. These teams were made up of cricketers and Dan’s mates.
The cricket was keenly contested but as expected the 2 scratch teams were knocked out before the final which was contested by Audley CC & Wood Lane CC with Audley coming out on top.
There were other activities going on as well with a number of stalls, a bouncy castle, face painting and an inflatable mini football pitch supplied by MACRON Store of Newcastle under Lyme.
A raffle and small auction also took place and a live band, The Cartello’s, performed in the evening.
The weather was very kind to us and the day was a great success raising £4,400 which will go towards Dan’s Heart screening fund.
We would like to thank Dave Cooper and Mathew Holmes in particular for their hard work and dedication in planning and staging this event, it was a credit to them.
Thanks to Spyder for providing the stumps, ball and bails.
Thanks also to Bignall End Cricket Club for hosting the event, all the players, officials, spectators, helpers and sponsors who attended and took part.
We’ve already started planning next year’s tournament which will take place at Wood Lane Cricket Club.
