Dr Papatheodorou graduated from University of Athens, Greece, in 2007. He completed general cardiology training in Greece. Soon after his graduation, he joined the Unit of Inherited Cardiovascular Disease of the University of Athens, gaining significant experience in the management of patients with inherited forms of heart disease and families with SADS victims. Since 2008 he is actively involved in athletes’ preparticitation screening, including elite athletes of major Greek sports clubs and participants in the Athens Classic Marathon.
In 2013 he moved to the UK in order to expand his core knowledge and expertise. After a year in the cardiomyopathy department of the Heart Hospital (UCL), he joined Professor Sanjay Sharma’s team in St George’s University Hospital. He has obtained the European Society of Cardiology accreditation for transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and level II accreditation for cardiac CT from the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (BSCI). He is a member of the ESC working group of myocardial and pericardial diseases and of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. His current research is focused on the investigation of inherited cardiac conditions predisposing to sudden death in young adults and sports cardiology with a special interest in the characterisation of the right heart’s adaptation to exercise.
