Fundraising efforts in memory of a man who died, aged 28, of an undetected heart condition have so far raised £30,000.
Marcus Armstrong’s family have been organising events to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young since he died, in 2006.
His brother, Adrian and cousin, Helen, ran in the London Marathon for the charity, while his dad, Tony, organised a soap star football match.
Money has also been donated to the fund by the family of Steward Sands, of Portland Crescent, Dovercourt, who died, aged 26, of a heart defect in April.
The latest event was at the Ship restaurant in Harwich, with artists donating paintings to an auction, which was part of a special lobster supper. A total of £1,690 was raised.
Tony Armstrong said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support the fund has received from local people and organisations.
“We set up the fund to prevent the death of other local young people from undetected heart conditions, by arranging local screening events.
“Already, one event has been held in Harwich and 130 people aged between 14 and 35 were checked by the team.”
It is hoped a children’s screening event can be held at the Harwich School in early December.
