It began as a few friendly matches between respective teams and has grown to a head to head competitive series organised by two Athletic University Unions. The Series now spans the whole of the second semester with 14 matches in 10 different sports.
The charity chosen for the 2010 series was Cardiac Risk in the Young – CRY – and the monies raised will help CRY to raise awareness of cardiac conditions in the young and to support the charity’s work in preventing more untimely and tragic deaths.
This charity is close to the hearts of those at the University of Nottingham and was chosen as the charity for 2010 in memory of Neil Desai – a talented sportsman and first class Law student from the University of Nottingham who died suddenly on 5th September 2008 – his 22nd birthday – from an undiagnosed heart condition.
The money raised from ticket sales for Varsity 2010 matches will go towards CRY’s work which raises awareness of conditions that could lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS).
At the conclusion of the Varsity Series matches between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University – which finished 8 – 6 in favour of Nottingham Trent University – £14,581.54 had been raised for CRY from the gate receipts.
